A heartless hacker has reportedly been stealing the identities of victims who were killed in the Florida condo building collapse.
The unidentified criminal has been committing identity theft against multiple victims who have been named in the news involving the collapse of the Champlain Towers South in Surfside, WPLG Local 10 first reported Friday.
Surfside Mayor Charles Burkett told WPLG Local 10 that he was stunned and was hoping for a speedy arrest.
Burkett said the hacker "violated the rights of an individual, but worse than that, a deceased individual and a family that is grieving."
"It's terrible," Burkett said. "I can't wait to put a face to these deeds right now, and I think all of South Florida is eager to see who would do something like this – what kind of person would do something like this."
The mayor added, "But I'm looking forward to our police department apprehending them, and they are out there looking. I wouldn't want to be that person right now."
Burkett told the news outlet that he did not want to provide any additional information regarding how the individual managed to steal victims' identities.
It was not clear how many victims were targeted in the scheme.
Insider has reached out to the Surfside Police Department for comment.
